To love or list: remodeling shows spark ideas in Conn. homeowners

Every day, millions of Americans turn to their televisions to learn how to upgrade their bathroom or remodel their kitchen.

It has become a daily custom in households as people watch programs like “This Old House” on PBS, “Property Brothers” and “Love It or List It” on HGTV and “Flip This House” on A&E.

“These kind of shows are very popular. You have different types of viewers,” said Dan Durbin, clinical professor at the School for Communications and Journalism at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. “You have the casual viewers and more-engaged viewers because they are interested in improving their homes. They look at the shows for inspiration and to pick clues.”

Home improvement shows have been on television for 30 years, Durbin said, but today’s programming is often interspersed with a conflict over whether the kitchen countertop should be granite or concrete, or if a bedroom should have carpeting or a hardwood floor.

Some of the popularity can be attributed to homeowners whose properties are “underwater,” and they opt to remain in the house and make the improvements themselves, Durbin said.

“People want to work on their own homes to feel fulfilled,” he said. “It opens immense possibilities for people who are thinking about remodeling their homes.”
