As the weather turns warmer, birds sing and flowers bloom, a homeowner’s thoughts turn to Sheetrock, Spackle and plumbing.

Spring is traditionally the time of year when many home improvement projects begin, and builders and experts say 2014 is shaping up as a solid growth year for renovation and remodeling.

The National Association of Home Builders projects that owners will spend $ 122.8 billion on home improvement this year, up 3.1 percent from 2013. Part of the reason for the increase could be that owners are getting more ambitious.

“In the past few years we were doing face-lifts,” said Pete Albanese, owner of Creative Kitchen and Bath of Wayne, referring to jobs like refacing cabinets, or swapping out countertops. “It’s starting to filter back to doing full remodels again … now I’m getting calls about a full kitchen remodel and a lot of bathrooms.”

Over the past four years, the Kiraly family in Wayne tackled several major projects, starting with the kitchen in 2010 and the master bath in 2012, Zoltan Kiraly said.
