Six years after they moved to the United States from Israel, Adi Tatarko and her husband Alon Cohen were finally able to buy their own home in Silicon Valley. The problem, however, was that they could not tell the architects and designers they talked to what they wanted done to their four-bedroom property from the images that were in their head.

“We didn’t have the right terminology,” says Tatarko. “Most of us are not professionals from the industry. We are not designers or architects or contractors, so when people came to our house and asked us, ‘Would you like to have … coffered ceilings here?’, we looked at them and said, ‘What?’ We started digging in books and magazines and reading a lot and trying to educate ourselves but the whole process was really difficult.”

Stepdaughter Ashley, 28, and son-in-law Chris, 30, are already on house No. 2.

It’s in the heart of The Woodlands, the master-planned community started in the mid-1970s just north of Houston. The home is 2,261 square feet, two stories, three bedrooms, two baths, one half-bath, built in 1986 on a 0.27-acre lot.

The backyard aches for horse shoes or washers or croquet or a volleyball net.

Or a dang horse. It’s huge.

It beats our place in Edmond in a couple of ways, not that there is any competition.

Our place is in ’80s-boom Edmond, a little more than a mile west and north of downtown. It is 2,001 square feet, one story, four bedrooms, two baths, built in 1987 on a 0.2-acre lot.

My backyard is a wilderness protection area. It aches for a brush hog and a wood chipper.

Or a wizard. It’s a mess.

Other than their great backyard and our dysfunctional backyard — and how much functionally bigger their 0.27-acre lot is than our 0.2-acre lot (about 2,000 square feet: room for another house) — our homes are comparable. Not that there is any competition.
