Distressed properties boost remodeling industry

The fixing up of distressed properties for resale, rent or residing in is doing more than helping neighborhoods recover and look prettier than they did in the depths of the housing crisis.

The activity is proving to be a huge shot in the arm for the nation’s home remodeling industry.

Robust growth in home improvement spending is under way, and the spending should translate to annualized double-digit percentage gains during 2013′s first half, according to an index of remodeling activity released earlier this month by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. What’s pushing the sector ahead is the work being done on distressed properties, work that Harvard estimated totaled $ 10 billion last year.

SAGINAW, MI — If you’re looking to remodel your kitchen, you can see several samples in the Home Builders Association of Saginaw’s first Kitchen Walk.

The association is joining with the Professional Women in Building & Covenant Kids to feature a tour of 15 kitchens in a variety of styles, sizes and budgets.

Half the proceeds from the walk, held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, will benefit Covenant Kids.

Most of the entries in the walk are remodels, from simple projects to major renovations. Participants can ask questions and learn more about redecorating and remodeling.

There are houses in Saginaw, Freeland, Midland, Bay City and Reese.

Tickets are $ 10 per person.
