Deputies Warn of Spring Home Improvement Scams

FREDERICK, Md. - As spring-like temperatures make their way through the Four-state, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office warns residents of home improvement scams.

“During the warmer months, people have a tendency to see more home improvement scams,” said Dep. Amanda Hatcher, spokesperson for the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say scammers are going door to door in neighborhoods, promising renovations for a cheap price.

The Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) states: “If a salesperson solicited or sold the home improvement, then the contract must also contain the name and license number of each salesperson.”

“Make sure that they have a good business name, address, telephone number, they can provide references,” added Dep. Hatcher. “Somebody’s that legitimate will be able to provide all of that.”

Officials believe the crooks are mainly targeting subdivisions of families and the elderly. The Sheriff’s Office says they’re taking a proactive approach to help combat the problem.
