Consumers warned about home improvement scams

As the spring weather begins to creep in, consumers are warned to be on the lookout for home improvement scams that could potentially cost thousands of dollars.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane warns residents in Pennsylvania to be cautious of transient contractors who often use the spring weather to target property owners in these scams.

Contractors offering to paint homes or pave driveways each spring are an indicator of this type of scam. Often these workers will do a shoddy job, causing customers to pay someone else to do the work properly.

According to Jeffrey Johnson, a spokesman for the Office of the Attorney General, the amount of money lost to these scams varies from case to case, but can exceed thousands of dollars.

The Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection said complaints involving home improvements or repairs are among the most common calls they receive.

“Be cautious and do your due diligence when selecting a contractor to work on your property,” Kane said in a press release.

The Bureau of Consumer Protection offers the following tips for consumers to avoid falling victim to such scams:

• Do not let anyone rush you into a home improvement project.

BAYONNE – City residents can pick up applications for free energy audits and home improvements for qualified low- and middle-income households tomorrow, city officials announced.

The applications will be available in the City Hall lobby tomorrow between noon and 4 p.m., city spokesman Joe Ryan said.

Through the New Jersey Comfort Partners Program, Bayonne renters and homeowners may be eligible to receive the following services for free:

– A home energy audit
– The tuning and cleaning of boilers and water heaters
– A check of combustion appliances for gas leaks and carbon monoxide (CO)
– The installation of a brand-new window/wall air conditioner
– The installation of a brand-new energy-efficient refrigerator and/or freezer
– The installation of high-efficiency lighting
– The installation of smoke/CO detectors
– The installation of low-flow shower heads
– The insulation of attics, rims, joists, and crawlspaces
– Door and window weatherization and air sealing
