Carthage seeks WIRC home improvement grant


Carthage mayor, Jim Nightingale, announced the opportunity to apply for grants to restore residential properties in the community.

This would not be the first time Carthage has taken advantage of the grants offered by the Western Illinois Regional Council.

“We have received the grant before,” said Nightingale, “and it’s a nice amount of money to help with properties in the community.”

Once the application is submitted and the WIRC identifies the criteria necessary for approval, the grant could total close to $ 250,000.

The mayor also said he was pleased with the presentation from Ameren regarding the tree trimming. Unfortunately, the attendance for the meeting was very poor.

“Residents could have benefited from the presentation,” Nightingale said. “It was well organized and informative.”

In similar order, Nightingale mentioned there was still no word of a FEMA or DNR representative coming to explain the flood plain maps. It is dependant on when a state representative travels to the county.

The council members agreed to close a section of the alley off of Adams Street.
