SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA — It began with the notion of a kitchen remodeling; a grandmother’s wish to expand the breakfast area in her Santa Monica, California, home to better accommodate the growing brood of grandchildren who come to visit every Saturday morning.

“I realized to do it right, I’d have to move walls and increase the square footage,” said Ruksana Mohammed, 60. “Then I thought about changing the facade of the house, which I never liked in the first place, and before I knew it, I was looking at spending a million dollars.”

She was not really attached to the house, which she described as “very ordinary.” She and her husband, Saleh, 68, a retired clothing and textile manufacturer and importer, bought the property for $ 334,000 in 1978, shortly after they — along with Mrs. Mohammed’s parents and five siblings — moved to Los Angeles from their home in Karachi, Pakistan.
